Thank you to Packt Publishing and Shruthi Shetty for sharing this piece with me before its release and for the continuous trust in me. I remember reviewing Marleen's latest book as if it were yesterday. Time really flies; that was in the summer of 2023, nearly three years ago! Oh, how drastically things have changed in our data visualization community and in technology globally since then.

Tim Ngwena's foreword added a nice touch. While AI can enhance dashboards and create simple charts, the true storytelling comes from us, humans, in how we present the insights derived from the data. I am genuinely a fan; Tim's YouTube videos have enlightened me and helped me become a more resourceful developer. This book is essential for anyone looking to master Tableau. I particularly recommend it for data analysts, analytical engineers, and business intelligence developers. It goes beyond just the tool itself; it provides valuable insights into developing data governance practices, understanding the Salesforce ecosystem, and utilizing AI-powered analytics.

Marleen Meier begins by laying the foundation for how to use and clean data in Tableau in the first two chapters. I was pleased to see that Prep Builder received its own dedicated chapter. This isn't about promoting the product, but rather about teaching the audience the importance of good data quality. Based on my work experience, I’ve found that data preparation—such as cleaning or data modelling—mainly occurs outside of Tableau. In multiple chapters, we explore various Tableau calculations, with one chapter specifically focused on Level of Detail (LODs) calculations, enhancing our understanding significantly. Additionally, we have the opportunity to further our learning by working with SVG files and creating custom polygons. If you can master these two, congratulations— you have elevated your expertise to a new level. Chapter 6 was a delightful surprise, as it covers topics that are not commonly discussed. I appreciate how the author demystifies data densification, domain completion, and padding in such an accessible manner.

I am a big fan of UX/UI design and its principles. Whenever I have the chance to present on dashboarding techniques and data storytelling, I always include my favorite key UX principles. I believe these principles are essential for creating effective dashboards. It genuinely warmed my heart to see them highlighted in this book as well.

Since the last edition, many developments and releases have taken place in the world of Salesforce and Tableau. Nowadays, we can hardly go a day without discussing AI. This new edition highlights all the new features and products Tableau has introduced recently, including Tableau AI and Tableau Next, while also covering advancements in Server, Pulse, and Cloud in the realm of advanced analytics. MCP (Model Context Protocol) has become a hot topic over the past six months, and I’m curious why it hasn’t received more attention than just a few brief words. The book is filled with practical examples, not just theory, empowering you, the reader, to enhance your dashboarding skills and create scalable dashboards that truly work. It is packed with best practices, design principles, and technical elements to help you progress well beyond a basic wisdom of Tableau.

By reading this book in its entirety, you will gain a comprehensive understanding of Tableau and learn how business intelligence has evolved in recent years. You'll also discover the future direction of this field, moving towards agentic analytics. The book explains how the semantics layer will function for us and how anonymous agents will reason on our behalf and for our audience. I am utterly curious what the next few years will bring to our datafam community!

Thank you, Marleen. Your sleepless nights and efforts to share this knowledge truly paid off in this book.
